ENERGY minister Daudi Migereko has urged farmers to engage in other businesses to increase their household incomes. Migereko said initiating other enterprises besides growing crops would help farmers to reduce poverty.

“Poverty is still a problem in this country yet most farmers, who own big chunks of land, don’t utilise it. Others only use it for subsistence farming, while the few, who grow for commercial purposes, fail to set up other enterprises,” he said.

Migereko was launching the National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) programme in Buyengo and Busedde sub-counties in Jinja district.

He appealed to Madhvani, who buys sugarcane from farmers, to help NAADS in making sure that farmers initiate other enterprises other than depending on the crop alone for income.

Chief administrative officer Iporotum Okiror urged farmers to form groups at sub-county level to benefit from NAADS funds.

The district NAADs coordinator, Dr. Paul Kigenyi, said Jinja received sh866m. He said 60% of the funds would be spent on farming inputs.
