THE Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, has urged people to deliver more children whom he said will become the future leaders.
He made the appeal during celebrations for Kkindu Catholic (church) sub-parish in Masaka district on Friday.
The day was also meant for the community to congratulate their children who had attained high positions in the Government.
They included Ssekandi, the retired Bishop of Fort Portal Diocese, Paul Kalanda, Dr. John Mary Sseremba, a Papal Knight, Dr. Edward Ssewanyana and Vincent Musubire.
Kalanda was also congratulated upon making 25 years as a bishop and 50 years in priesthood. Monsignor Lawrence Jjumba clocked 57 years in priesthood.
Besides, 12 couples wedded that day.
Stephen Lubowa, 80, who wedded 45-year-old Specioza Kyomuhendo, was among the couples that formalised their marriages on August 15. The day also coincided with the Virgin Mary’s ascension to heaven.
Ssekandi warned couples against entertaining rumours. “You should also shun rumour mongering to have stable marriages.â€
Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa of Masaka Diocese said Ssekandi had exhibited fairness and trustworthiness during parliamentary proceedings.
“He doesn’t take sides.â€
Kaggwa thanked the Christians who contributed towards the construction of the church.
The parish priest, the Rev. Father Emmanuel Bukulu, said sh42m was still needed to complete the church.
Kaggwa contributed sh2m towards the construction of the priest’s house, while Ssekandi gave sh1m.
The Mwange Rural Development Association chaired Musubire distributed blankets, clothes and soap to the poor.
The association is also building a borehole for the church and the surrounding community.
