NATIONAL Insurance Corporation (NIC) has joined the list of sponsors for the Uganda Sports Press Association road safety campaign with a contribution of sh2.5m.

The annual event scheduled for Saturday is in memory of four executive members who perished in a road accident near Lugazi town in August 2001 while conducting USPA activities.

The campaign under the theme: “A Seat Belt Can Save Life” will involve a procession, painting zebra-crossings in the town and cleaning around a monument erected in memory of the deceased USPA members.

Francis Batte Junior, Leo Kabunga, Simon Peter Ekarot, Kenneth Matovu died on their way from Jinja.

NIC manager in charge of the private sector Ann Canowira handed over the cheque to USPA president Douglas Mazune at a press conference at the insurers boardroom yesterday.

NIC’s contribution will be used for T-shirts, banners and stickers carrying the road safety messages.

NIC company secretary Akin Reju promised a strong partnership with the association in creating road safety awareness in the future.

“What we have given you today is just a token. NIC will always cooperate with USPA. We regard your association as one of integrity,” Reju said on behalf of the managing director Bola Ososanya.

City Tyres were the first to come on board with a sh4.5m contribution last week. USPA’s major sponsor, uganda telecom, is also expected to unveil their package for the drive soon.
