Men urged to use family planning

MEN in Iganga do not want to use contraceptives to space their children, Amos Ndaabe, the district family planning coordinator, has revealed, reports George Bita.

Ndaabe observed that recent research showed that men in the area get pride in having a huge number of children.

“With a 23% contraception usage, the area has one of the highest number of births in the country. However, the men are happy with it because they do not want to practice family planning,” he observed.

He said this has made women in the region to compete producing babies for the sake of appeasing their husbands, saying that “the men cannot stand having a wife who cannot produce on almost a yearly basis”.

“The women who embrace family planning risk their husbands getting other wives because culture encourages large families. So it is not surprising that the women here tend to have the highest fertility rates in the country,” Ndaabe said on Tuesday.

He wondered why women should struggle to please men by producing like rabbits without any concern for their health.

He advised men to utilise family planning services which are the key to manageable families.

“We have a problem with men. Most of them do not want to use any form of family planning, but I believe with sensitisation, they will realise the benefits of small families and adapt to the methods available,” Ndaabe said.
