NATIONAL Council of Sports (NCS) is the latest to join the list of sponsors for the annual Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA) road safety campaign with a sh2m contribution.

The supreme local sports governing body yesterday fulfiled a promise made by general secretary Jasper Aligawesa during last year’s event in Lugazi.

Aligawesa personally presented the cheque to USPA treasurer Mpalanyi Ssentongo at the NCS headquarters in Lugogo.

“They have fulfiled their promise. It will go a long way to strengthen our relationship with NCS as the mother body of sports in this country,” USPA president Douglas Mazune said.

The contribution comes just after National Insurance Corporation (NIC) offered sh2.5m for the campaign set for this Saturday.

City Tyres was the first to come on board with a sh4.5m cheque last week.

USPA’s main sponsors uganda telecom will also soon divulge their package.

The campaign is in memory of Francis Batte Junior, Leo Kabunga, Simon Peter Ekarot and Kenneth Matovu, then USPA executive members who perished in a road accident at Lugazi in August 2001.

Under the theme: “A Seat Belt Can Save Life”, the campaign will also involve a march, painting a zebra-crossing in Lugazi and cleaning the monument erected in memory of the four fallen journalists.

A memorial service will follow August 28 at Christ The King Church, Kampala.
