CHARITIES including the Salaama School of the Blind and Daughters of Charity will benefit from the sh17m raised at the Royal Ascot Goat Races on Saturday at Speke Resort Munyonyo. The target was sh15m. The “Goat Olympics” lived to their billing, attracting a mammoth crowd and redefining entertainment on the local social scene.

Those who did not make it watched from home, thanks to UBC TV’s live coverage. A family day out of sorts, kids had their fun in paintball shooting, the bouncing castle and other kiddie attractions.

This year, the hospitality tents were fewer but better with acres of space. It was a challenge from the participants to dream up the best décor concepts and I think WARID took the day, courtesy of Events Warehouse.

Deservingly in second place was Zain whose décor was courtesy of Silk Events. So big was WARID that it unbelievably attracted MTN’s Noel Meier.

It was shocking to see two main rivals chatting animatedly! Was WARID courting Meier? All other big guns including hosts, the Ruparelias, the Alikers and the Wavamunnos, visited the red tent.

With a Turkish setting complete with smoking pipes, live band entertainment, beautiful ushers, Mongolian dishes, and South African belly dancers who danced with pregnant women, it was the place to be.

Zain’s karaoke, Infinity dancers, fully stocked bar and buffet welcomed guests to a wonderful world. When everyone else had left, it looked like the day had just began for Zain.

The Kampala Casino/utl tent was not as pompous as it was in past editions and the same can be said of Kenya Airways and Open House.

Crane Bank will always be the same; attracting just anyone and causing many couples hangovers — it was a place for champagne and food. In the main court (non VIP), the grass was wet and soggy and after a few hours the drinks had run out. Revellers leaving the tent were rewarded with roses.

A plane hovering in the sky with engaging spins was another highlight. The event was a sea of fashion, the good, bad and ugly reigned with the former winning prizes that included trips to scenic places.

Done with the goats, revellers danced wildly with joy.
