Do not waste tax payers money

EDITOR— It is totally unjust for taxpayers to pay for the upkeep of private traditional/cultural leaders, some of whom have nothing traditional but are elected like LCs.

Where is the justice in making the people of Kigezi pay for the comfort of the Kabaka (thank God he refused to be paid by the Government), Omukama or the newly self-created ssaabaluuli and ssaabanyara? What business do the people of Ankole, who have no Omugabe, have in supporting Rwot’s comfort? If you have a cultural institution and you love it, pay for it yourself.

What do these leaders do with regard to social and cultural development? Yet they draw sh5m per month from our tax money.

Since the Constitution was promulgated in 1995 a number of new “cultural leaders” have risen because there is the allure of a fat salary for doing nothing but claiming to be “cultural leader”.

Instead of paying them, let the Government use that money to build good roads and pay civil servants. If the Government pays cultural leaders, it should pay religious leaders even more because of their contribution to socio-economic development of our nation.

I request Parliament to scrap salaries for cultural leaders.
