Torch guard wins hearts
CHINA-The young man, who guarded the Olympics torch through its world tour has won legions of Chinese female fans — and plenty of marriage proposals. Known only as ‘Second Brother on the Right’ because of his customary position by the flame, the young man with boyish looks and cropped hair is an Internet sensation and national hero. Pictures of him in regulation abound on websites and Chinese media, with some fans likening him to Lei Feng, an idolised soldier of the Mao Zedong era.

Catholic groups petition Pope
VATICAN-More than 50 Catholic groups published an unusually frank open letter to Pope Benedict saying the Church’s ban on contraception had been “catastrophic” and urged him to lift it. The letter was published as a paid advertisement in Corriere della Sera, Italy’s largest newspaper, on the 40th anniversary of the late Pope Paul VI’s “Humanae Vitae,” which enshrined the ban.
