Meat dealers in agreement
KAMPALA-The management of Basajjabalaba Hides and Skins Company has reached an agreement with over 500 meat dealers to pay sh12,000 per animal slaughtered. Hassan Basajjabalaba had asked for sh15,000 per cow. Last week, the meat dealers at the Kampala abattoir on Old Port Bell Road, protested over the increased taxes. The dealers, led by their chairman, Issa Nsubuga, described the proposed tax as exorbitant. The abattoir was leased to Basajjabalaba by Kampala City Council in 2000 for a period of 49 years. The company also agreed to leave the skins, horns and blood from the slaughtered animals to the butchers.
