THE fisheries authorities in Mukono district have burnt illegal fishing nets worth about sh70m at Zzinga fishing site, Bugaya sub-count, reports Alex Bukumunhe.
The nets were impounded during an operation carried out by the Police, local leaders and the beach management unit officials on landing sites around Lake Victoria.
The area LC3 chairman, James Kayizza, said some fishermen voluntarily handed over their illegal nets.
The district fisheries officer, Deo Mutumba, said in an interview on Monday, that some fishermen had joined the authorities in the fight against illegal fishing.
Recently, the Government introduced maritime security, to help the Police curb illegal fishing on the lake.
