A newly-born baby boy was on Wednesday rescued from a 40-feet deep pit latrine at Mugalike health centre in Kibaale district.

A newly-born baby boy was on Wednesday rescued from a 40-feet deep pit latrine at Mugalike health centre in Kibaale district.

The baby was recovered in a joint operation by the Police and residents of Mugalike village in Kyanaisoke sub-county.

The Police said Lydia Baleke, a Senior One student at Uganda Martyrs Secondary School, had just delivered the baby at the health centre.

people who heard a cry from the latrine reported the matter to Kyezige Police post.

The baby was taken to St. Ambrose Health Centre in Kagadi town, while the mother was whisked to Kagadi Police station.

The head of Kagadi Police criminal investigations department, Eric Wabwire, said they had allowed Baleke to breastfeed her baby as investigations continued.
