THE Islamic Holy month of Ramadhan is pushing foodstuff prices up, according to a survey in the Kampala major markets. The survey carried out in Kalerwe, St Balikuddembe (Owino), Nakawa, Nakasero and Natete markets showed that there was high demand for food especially during evening hours.

Cassava flour was sold at sh700, up from sh500, while maize flour went for sh1,350, up from sh1,300 a kilogramme. Beans were sold at sh1,800, up from sh1,500, while soya beans went up to sh2,500, from sh2,200 a kilogramme.

Groundnuts went for sh3,000, up from sh2,800, while simsim was sold at sh3,500, up from sh3,000 a kilogramme.

A bunch of matooke sells for between sh7,000 and sh10,000, while a heap of cassava and potatoes go for sh1,000 each.
Significant contributions to the high prices is coming from goat meat, Irish potatoes, millet grain, rice, turkey, eggs, fish, fruits and vegatables.
