BONIFACE Kiprop failed in his bid to improve his 5000m personal best in the last IAAF outdoor event, as he only managed 13 minutes 22.75 seconds in the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix on Saturday.

Kiprop, whose personal best in the event stands at 12:57.11 — which he ran in Stockholm in 2006 — has not had a very good season. He had looked at the Shanghai event as his last hope to improve.

“The race started with a strong pace that would have seen the first pack run under 13 minutes, but the tempo dropped just after,” said Jurrie Van der Velden, the manager of 10th placed Benjamin Kiplagat and 12th place Stephen Kiprotich.

Kiprotich dropped off the lead pack after 2.5km and Kiplagat followed suit another kilometre after. Kiprop stayed on until the final lap but failed to find the kick effort, to finish eighth.

Kiprop and Kiprotich are expected back in the country this week after the event.

Kiplagat will next week first take part in a four mile road run in the Netherlands, before he flies back home to take some rest ahead of the new season.
