A TOTAL of 88 prisoners who sat for an adult literacy examination have passed. The prisoners, both on remand and those serving their sentences, were awarded certificates in Functional Adult Literacy on Friday at the Gulu Central Prison.

This was during the district’s commemoration of the International Literacy Day. The prison head, Alex Oloka Mukola, said over 100 inmates enrolled for the programme but only 88 passed the stage I and II examinations.

“Learning is part of the rehabilitation for the inmates as we prepare them to be good citizens,” Oloka said.

He added that the literacy programme was launched last year with support from the district and Non-Governmental Organisations.

The prison chief said 16 inmates had registered for this year’s Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) at Gulu Prison Primary School.

He called for continued support to the education programmes among the prison community.

Regional manager of LABE, an organisation supporting adult literacy in the country, said literacy was a right for all citizens, irrespective of one’s position in society.

The function was presided over by Gulu district secretary for community service, Santa Oketta.

“With FAL, you can study till you reach university level. Make good use of your stay in the prison so that the day you get out, you are changed and enlightened,” Santa Oketta counselled the inmates.

The district adult literacy head, Gureti Oketch, said 2,269 learners had completed the different stages of adult literacy. She said the district had opened 83 learning centres and trained 134 instructors.
