THE UN has set strict travel rules for its staff operating in Karamoja sub-region, citing increased insecurity in the area.
Godfrey Kasenge of the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) said the Karimojong warriors had been attacking civilian vehicles and UN convoys.

He said the agency had set the time for travel between 8:00am to 6:00pm.
“Following the recent wave of insecurity in the region, all UN activities in Karamoja must be carried out with use of armed escorts,” Kasenge said.

Last month, the Jie Karimojong warriors ambushed two Gateway buses in Kotido district, killing two people and injuring 16.
The incident occurred barely a week after the warriors had staged another ambush on the UN convoy where they shot dead a UPDF driver of the escort vehicle.

However, the 3rd Division Commander, Brig. Patrick Kankiriho, said the new UN travel time was unrealistic and meant to create a state of alarm in Karamoja.

“There is no area in Karamoja or even any where in Uganda that is inaccessible.”
