UNRA only doing repairs

EDITOR—I write to appreciate The New Vision’s interest and coverage of the activities of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA). However, I would like to clarify something on the story entitled, “3,500km of roads to be tarmacked this year†published on October 4.
EDITOR—I write to appreciate The New Vision’s interest and coverage of the activities of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA). However, I would like to clarify something on the story entitled, “3,500km of roads to be tarmacked this year†published on October 4.
The impression the headline created was that the UNRA is going to tarmack 3,500km of roads.
The right position is that UNRA is responsible for 10,800 kilometres designated as national roads, 3,500km of which are already tarmacked. UNRA is carrying out routine maintenance on all the 3,500km of tarmacked roads under a programme dubbed “Operation No Potholesâ€.
This routine maintenance involves repairing failed shoulders, patching and resealing the road surface.
Our target is to have smooth flow of traffic without the constraints of broken road surfaces.
In addition to the routine repairs of existing tarmac roads, UNRA is also going to upgrade about 400km from gravel (marrum) to tarmac starting this financial year. Some of the roads to be upgraded to tarmac are Fort Portal-Bundibugyo, Matugga-Semuto-Kapeka and Kapchorwa-Suam.
