THE Government has pledged to provide tax holidays to local manufacturers to improve locally-produced products. The move is aimed at boosting productivity, the Premier, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, said last week, reports Dick Kasolo.

Launching the partnership between Nice House of Plastics and the Thailand-based Srithai Superware, at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, Nsibambi appealed to Ugandans to support locally-manufactured products to enhance businesses. Srithai produces melamine products and Schneider Pen, a new product from Germany marketed by Nice House of Plastics.

Nsibambi called for partnerships with neighbouring countries in an effort to expand the market segment of local products.

Prof. James Mulwana, the head of Nice House of Plastics, who was recently given an award by Ugandans living in America, noted that there were still challenges of adopting to advanced technology for small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) to compete favourably with foreign products on international market.

Sana Angubolkul, the chairman and president of Superware, called for government’s support to SMEs since they are the backbone to development.
