THE Police in Jinja municipality on Tuesday rounded up over 30 idlers.

The Jinja district Police commander, John Cohen Arinaitwe, said among those netted were seven suspected sex workers, who were found on Gokhale and Kutch roads waiting for customers.

He identified one of them as Hasifah, who had a five-month pregnancy. Over 20 youths were found loitering in the town in the wee hours of the night.

“The operation, named ‘Operation Kama Mbaya’, which the Police launched on October 3, was conducted in Jinja town and in trading centres on the outskirts of the town to fight the crime rate in the district,” Arinaitwe said.

He said there had been an increase in crime, especially robbery, theft, rape, pick-pocketing, bhangi smoking and terrorism threats, prompting the operation.

Arinaitwe advised the public to report suspicious people to the Police.

“Terrorism threats are still in Jinja and I want to request the public to continue feeding the Police with information about wrong doers, so that they can be apprehended,” Arinaitwe said.

He said the ban on parking vehicles at filling stations at night was still on and warned drivers and vehicle owners that those who defy the ban would be arrested. He said those rounded up would be charged with being idle and disorderly.
