GULU Police have launched an operation to round up youth who grow and smoke opium. The operation that started on Thursday saw 14 youth, including seven girls, arrested from Olailong in Layibi Division, Gulu Municipality. They were detained at Gulu Police Station.

The youth were arrested in possession of rolled opium ready to smoke and other dried leaves in a tray. Some leaves were still raw.

The northern regional Police spokesman, Johnson Kilama, said there was increased drug abuse in the area, especially opium smoking, among the youth.
“A number of people are getting mad. Theft has also increased and other criminal activities are on the rise because of smoking opium,” he said.

Kilama, who paraded the 14 youth on Thursday identified Olailing, Cuk p’Oweka, Cereleno in Layibi division; Forest ward, Ariaga, Limo in Laroo division, Kasubi Small Gate and Kanyagoga in Bardege division as some of the places where opium smoking was rampant.

“We have also heard that some people are growing bhangi in their places but I would like to warn them that it is criminal.

Whoever the Police will arrest indulging in this criminal act will be taken to court and charged with being in possession of and/ or smoking bhangi. We want to reduce the crimes committed by such people,” Kilama said.

He said due to the influence of drugs, some young girls had started engaging in prostitution.

“They rent small huts in the slums and conduct their sex vending businesses there,” he said.

Kilama appealed to local leaders to report cases of bhangi smoking.
