EDITOR—Our attention has been drawn to an article entitled “Besigye nails government over poor roads” and a letter entitled “Tororo-Mbale road is impassable” published on October 21.

Whereas we acknowledge that these two roads are in poor condition, I would like to inform the public that the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) is actively working to improve their condition. UNRA has awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of the Mbarara-Ntungamo Road to Spencon and Stirling.

As an emergency response, UNRA has instructed these contractors (Spencon-Stirling joint venture) to carry out temporary works to make the road surface motorable before the commencement of major works immediately afterwards. UNRA would also like to assure the public that practical measures are in place to maintain the existing Mbale-Tororo road in good motorable condition until permanent rehabilitation works are undertaken next financial year.

When UNRA took over responsibility for the Mbale-Tororo Road it had deteriorated so much that it required complete reconstruction.

The Mbale-Tororo road is one of the projects to be executed during this financial year. UNRA is aware of the contribution roads make to economic development and poverty reduction and is doing everything possible to ensure that proper and sustainable roads are built and maintained.
