THE Police in Kabarole district have arrested a special Police constable (SPC) and his son for looting property belonging to accident victims.

Moses Mainuka attached to Kibiito Police post in Fort Portal, and his son, John Mainuka, were arrested on Saturday night.

They are suspected to have stolen property from a lorry, which overturned at Kasunganyanja on the Fort Portal-Kasese road.

The lorry, which was carrying cement, iron sheets and mattresses, was heading to the DR Congo from Kampala.
Western regional Police spokesman Elly Matte said Mainuka and his son were found with mattresses, a digital camera and a laptop computer belonging to the accident victims.

Mainuka, Matte added, had been deployed at the scene to guard the property.

Eight mattresses were recovered from one of Mainuka’s neighbours. The President recently directed that people who loot property of accident victims be punished.

The directive follows an accident in Bulyantente in Lugazi, Mukono district in which 27 people perished when a bus collided with a trailer. People who went to the scene looted the victims’ property instead of helping the injured.
