CARE International has distributed 1,266 local breed goats and 100 high breed Boer goats to 66 women groups in Gulu, Amuru and Pader districts.

Justin Ojara Lawot, the LC3 chairman of Alero sub-county, warned the women against slaughtering the goats.

Pius Okello Ongom, the Care International programme manager, said: “Alero is the first sub-county to receive the goats of the 20 sub-counties in Gulu, Amuru and Pader districts. We shall bring the Boer goats later for cross-breeding to improve on the quality of the kids.”

Basil Odongpiny P’Akio, the district secretary of production, said more women were joining the village saving and loans association commonly known as Bol Icup.

He urged men to support their wives in the fight against poverty. “We need prosperity for the active poor other than prosperity for all. If you are poor and not active, then you will not benefit from the government’s Prosperity-for-All programme,” he said.
