MAKERERE University wants to out-source all non-academic services like catering, gardening and sanitation.

The move is to reduce wages paid to casual workers, MPs heard yesterday.

University secretary Sam Akorimo yesterday told the MPs on the public accounts committee that they intend to lay off about 100 casual workers.

“The university wants to concentrate on offering academic services and research work alone, and privatise all the non-academic services to generate income and improve the services,” Akarimo said.

The university also wants to stop offering meals and accommodation to government-sponsored students, due to the Government’s under-funding, Akorimo said.

“The university is seeking the Government’s approval to privatise the non-academic services,” Akorimo added.

However, committee chairperson Sebuliba Mutumba warned the university not to expedite laying off of the casual workers, saying they must consider the workers’ laws.

University bursar Ben Byambabazi, deputy registrar James Okello and Akorimo appeared before the committee to answer queries raised by the Auditor General’s report of 2006.

Akorimo said the Government pays sh43b each financial for 7,500 students, while 23,000 private students generates sh50b only.

“The university has a deficit of sh136b, yet the Government only gives us sh43b; so we can’t pay for the academic staff, part-time lecturers and feed the students.

About reports of forged academic transcripts, Okello said the university is to hire a private company to print hard-to forge academic transcripts.
