THE election of the Kyabazinga of Busoga Kingdom scheduled to take place today is in balance.

The kingdom information minister, Michael Kifubangabo, yesterday said the elections would go ahead as planned, in spite of the order issued by the Constitutional Court stopping the exercise.

Kifubangabo said the kingdom had not been served with the order formally.

Earlier, before the court order was issued, the Issabalangira (chief prince), David Kaunhe, also said the election of a new Kyabazinga would go on regardless of attempts by some chiefs to block it.

Two chiefs, Abubaker Kakaire and Cranimer Sajjabi, took the Government, Kaunhe and the Katukiro (prime minister), Wilson Muwereza, to the Constitutional Court in an attempt to block the election.

There was also a Jinja High Court injunction dated October 22, that blocked Kigulu Prince Patrick Izimba from participating.

Lt. Col. Chris Mudoola, a rival chief, was behind the court order since he also claims the Ngobi title of the Kigulu chiefdom.

Kifubangabo said only 10 out of the mandatory 11 hereditary chiefs of Busoga would take part in the election, because a court injunction had been issued against Izimba.

However, Izimba recently said court could not block him from participating in the election.

He said he had not officially received the court injunction, adding that he could not be threatened by court orders.

“The Kigulu chiefdom case is in court and, therefore, we do not yet have an official representative to elect a Kyabazinga on behalf of the Abakigulu. It also follows that the race now has only three contestants: Gabula, Wambuzi and Mutyaba,” Kifubangabo said on Wednesday.

The minister identified the chiefs eligible to vote as Wellington Nabwana of Luuka, Edward Wambuzi of Bulamogi, Badru Ntembe of Butembe, Munulo Luba of Bunyha and Kakaire of Bugweri.

Others are Gabula Nadiope of Bugabula, Christopher Mutyaba of Bukono, Kaunhe Wakhooli of Bukhooli (also acting Kyabazinga), Kisiki of Busiki and Nanyumba of Bunyole.

The four vying for the throne are Christopher Mutyaba (Bukono), Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV (Bugabula), Edward Colombus Wambuzi (Bulamogi) and Patrick Izimba Gologolo (Kigulu), whom court has blocked from contesting.
