AUTHORITIES at Kibibi Secondary School have stopped a Senior Six student from sitting her final examinations after she became pregnant while in school.

Fatuma Nansamba, 19, who gave birth in August, had registered for her A’Level examinations at the school.

Haji Mubiru, the head teacher, allegedly dismissed her from the school in July.

A’Level examinations begin next month.

Yusuf Nsubuga, the commissioner for secondary education, yesterday declined to comment on the matter.

Aggrey Kibenge, the ministry spokesperson, said: “The human aspect should prevail and the girl should be assisted to do examinations. We need to look at the girl’s future and that of the baby.”

He said the ministry would talk to the head teacher to allow Nansamba to do her examinations.

Nansamba’s mother, Jalia Nambooze, said: “We have appealed to the Police, but the head teacher has refused, saying that the girl was a disgrace to the school. We went to the school on Tuesday and the head teacher sent us away,” she said.

Mubiru was not available for comment but a teacher said the staff was divided over Nansamba’s fate.

The teacher said the school, which follows Muslim principles, was strict on discipline.

Eva Konde spokesperson of the Uganda National Examinations Board, said Nansamba should be allowed to sit the examinations.

“The girl should be allowed to sit examinations as long as she duly registered. We shall communicate to that effect,” she said.
