The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is owed sh54b by government institutions in rent arrears. This has made it fail to undertake the required improvements at Entebbe Airport, Ignie Igundura, the CAA public affairs manager, has said. He said the arrears have accumulated over the last 17 years.

He said the Government institutions owing them money include the Uganda Revenue Authority and the Immigration Department.

Igundura said though the defaulting institutions have been given several reminders, they have refused to pay, claiming they are government institutions.

He said this during a field trip of Entebbe Airport by representatives of the transport sector on Friday.

The group wanted to assess improvements at the airport and find out challenges the aviation authority faces. Igundura asked the representatives who included MPs, to help them recover the money to enable CAA fulfill its mandate.

The Bukanga Member of Parliament, Nathan Byanyima, called for the construction of other airports in Kampala and neighbouring districts to ease the congestion at Entebbe International Airport.
