It is unusual for Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi to be challenged in political arguments. However, on Tuesday in Parliament it was a different story. Nsibambi read the Government position on both the minority and majority reports on the NSSF/Temangalo saga. But Chwa MP Okello Okello asked him not to refer to any notice but to give the government decision for ministers Amama Mbabazi and Ezra Suruma. To this, Nsibambi responded: “I am a professor of political science and I can speak without referring to notice. The government has absolved both ministers of any wrongdoing.”

The Secretary to the Electoral Commission (EC), Sam Rwakoojo, on Tuesday did not amuse MPs when he said the EC lacked stationery. Rwakoojo gave the MPs on the Public Accounts Committee two copies of his defence to the Auditor General’s Report 2006 to be shared by 10 people and pleaded: “Excuse me, the commission has run short of stationery and we are also facing financial constraints, just bear with me and share those two copies.” However, the MPs found it cumbersome to crowd over the table where the two copies were prompting MP Ssebuliba Mutumba to ask: “If the commission runs out of stationery, what will happen during the presidential and parliamentary elections comes in 2011?”Rwakoojo had no answer.

Buyaga county MP Barnabs Tinkansiimire has started a war with the press because journalists are ‘traitors’ and he will never invite them to any function he holds. “If I hold any function and the media attends it, I will treat it as criminal tresspass,” he declared. this followed a session when journalists put the MP to task to explain why he claimed that they had been bribed by the anti-Mbabazi group to write stories accusing Mbabazi of wrongdoing in the Temmangalo –NSSF land saga. However Tinkansimire should know that it is not easy to wage a war to the press, because he can’t do without them.
