SUPREME Court judge, Justice George Kanyeihamba, has praised President Yoweri Museveni, referring to him as a champion of education in Uganda.

Kanyeihamba, who has in the past been critical of Museveni and his government, especially in the area of human rights, was last week generous in his description of the President. “I have always praised the President for his vision and contribution to education in this country,” he said.

Speaking in his capacity as the chancellor of Kampala International University, during the university’s fifth graduation ceremony, Kanyeihamba said whereas there may be areas in which he disagrees with Museveni’s policies and actions, his support for the President’s achievements in education was unquestionable.

“People may disagree with him on other issues but for me, I have never minced words in my admiration and I would like to thank him for his contribution in this area,” he told guests.

Kanyeihamba revealed that his appointment to the position of chancellor was as an outcome of Museveni’s good recommendation.

“Mr. Hassan Basajjabalaba consulted the President on who to appoint chancellor. It is him (Museveni) who suggested my appointment as chancellor of this university,” he said.

He also told guests that the President had from time to time taken personal interest in the development of the university, which has trained and sent out to the market a record 2,322 students this year.

“The President has been closely involved in the evolution of this university,” Kanyeihamba said.

He added: “Museveni has not lost any opportunity to promote and support the development of education in this university and others.”

His comments came only days after he was voted as the best judge in promoting fundamental freedoms and the rule of law in Uganda.
