OVER sh500b is earned annually from milk in western Uganda, the Uganda Investment Authority’s board chairman, Patrick Bitature, has revealed.

Bitature said sh1b is earned per day from matooke from the region. “Western Uganda produces 500,000 litres of milk per day worth sh1.5b. If modern and improved agricultural practices are established, production will increase,” he added.

Bitature was delivering a paper at a management forum at a workshop at Mountains of the Moon Hotel in Fort Portal on Saturday.

He said the private sector was an engine of development, especially in areas of modern agriculture and business.

“The private sector is an avenue for creating employment for the growing population by setting up of factories and other businesses because the Government provides only 4,000 jobs. The Government only creates an enabling environment to do business,” Bitature observed.

He noted that the Government and individuals should develop the various resources in order to create jobs.

Bitature appealed to the Government and other stakeholders to make youths productive in order to make the country peaceful and secure.

He noted that employment makes people feel useful and builds self-esteem to work hard and improve their living standards.

The workshop, which was attended by over 200 people, had students of universities and higher institutions of learning plus district and non-governmental organisations’ officials.
