PARLIAMENT yesterday passed a motion urging the Government to use DDT and icon to eradicate mosquitos that spread malaria.

“As the health ministry, we shall use the appropriate chemical acceptable to the people to control mosquitoes,” said Emmanuel Otala, state minister for primary health care.

The motion, moved by Rosemary Sseninde (Wakiso) on Tuesday, was unanimously supported by all MPs after being seconded by Gen. Elly Tumwine (UPDF).

Tumwine told the house malaria was the leading cause of morbidity that kills 320 people daily.

“How can we let this preventable disease claim all these lives for more than 50 years? I call this criminal negligence that has resulted into death and all leaders should be prosecuted,” Tumwine said.

Malaria kills 120,000 people in Uganda annually. The most affected are pregnant mothers and children aged below five.

“If malaria is the greatest killer, then I suggest that we employ the greatest method to fight it and that is, indoor residual spaying,” he said.
Sseninde asked the speaker to inquire from the Attorney General about the court injunction that was slammed on the use of DDT in Apac and Oyam.

“How can someone be against DDT when in Apac, a person is exposed to 1040 mosquito bites per year, and every four minutes a person dies from malaria?” Tumwine asked.

He said he had never known of any catastrophe that consistently kills 320 people daily.

Tumwine said there was no country that had eradicated malaria without using DDT.
