ORGANISERS have confirmed that a record 10,800 runners have registered for the 5th MTN Kampala International marathon.

This is 4000 runners more than last year. The marathon on Sunday will also have subsidiary events in both the half marathon and 10km race.

The 10km race will have competition in the open, masters, wheel chair, tri-cycle and corporate races.

MTN brand and sponsorship manager Aggrey Kagonyera yesterday said that they had put everything in place and they are ready for the event. All the proceeds will go towards the Red Cross Mama Bag project.

“We are prepared for the challenge and everything is okay. We are just looking forward for the flagging off,” Kagonyera announced at a press briefing at Oasis Club, Lugogo yesterday. Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura will be the chief guest.

“It has been a combined effort by all the different stake holders to make it a success. The marathon has steadily grown from just 1,600 runners five years back to over 10,000 runners,” said Kagonyera.

Red Cross will provide a team of 53 medics that includes eight doctors 10 physiotherapists and 10 clinical officers, 25 nurses and 200 first aid specialists, who will be part of the 900 volunteers on duty.
