IF this is how Sadolin Power intend to win the 2008 men’s national basketball championship, then few fans will have any queries with their style –– with the exception of those whose allegiance is to the Mogas Falcons of course.
On Wednesday night, Power thumped the defending champions 109-85 in Game 1 of the MTN-FUBA Playoff-finals with a display, that took the crowd in the Lugogo stadium to an immeasurable level of sporting ecstasy.
Led by Isaac Afidra, who had a commanding all-round performance and ended with 20 points, Joseph Ikong, top-scored with 22 as Power made a statement.
This was not so much a contest as a class in free-flowing basketball conducted by the Power masters.
Power finished the second quarter 43-27 ahead, and by the end of the third quarter, were leading by 32 points.
With just over a minute to play and Power on 99 points, chants of “we want a hundred†started ringing through the crowd, and their request was obliged to when Ikong soon laid up on the break to make it 101.
With the Malinga brothers restricted to a combined 18 points, Falcons’ scoring duties were carried by Isaac Lugudde and Sam Obol, who netted a team-high 20 and 18 points respectively.
Still, as the six time champions Falcons showed last year, few conclusions should be accordingly made about how the rest of the series will pan out. Game 2 is on Tuesday.
Earlier, Flavio Oketcho (10) and Frances Nabulobi (9),led the Lady Canons to a resounding 50-24 victory over an off-colour A1 Challenge.
