IN the restaurant business, only the fair and outstanding that have invested in quality food and service will last long. Haandi Indian restaurant which celebrates 13 years in business this year, is one such restaurant. Roger Mugisha finds out why:

First off, because Haandi upholds the Hindu and Muslim beliefs, they do not serve beef or pork in the restaurant.

On their starter section, one cannot go wrong with the chicken lollipops, goat-ribs with vegetables and the chilly paneers (juicy paneer fingers tossed with onions, peppers, tomatoes and green herbs) or the Tandoori paneer tikka (paneer cubes marinated in yoghurt mix and charcoal grilled).

Under the main course, the Paneer butter masala (homemade cottage cheese in creamy onion tomato masala) with Dal Bukhara (black lentils) together with Haandi chicken Makhini (barbeque boneless chicken simmered in special tomato royal gravy) are an excellent choice.

All their foods can be prepared mild, medium or extremely hot depending on the customer’s preference.

The rice options range from basmati, mattar pilao, vegetable, chicken and mutton biryani. And in the bread section, they have tandoori, roomali rotis and the pudina, plain and palak methi parathas.

Under the Naan selections, guests can choose from garlic, chili, onion, palak mehti, cheese, paneer, aloo, lacha paratha, bhatura and masala kulcha variations.

As for the seafood, one can only marvel at the Tandoori (Indian clay oven) prawns that are laced with a tantalising masala.

For dessert, the variety of sweets is limitless; ranging from the pista kulfi (a creamy flavoured ice cream topped with rose syrup), and the scrumptious Gulab Jamun (Indian sweets made from evaporated milk and sugar).

The combination of yoghurt and creams makes these sweets appetising.
With a fast food outlet at Garden City called the Haandi Udipi (opened in 2001) that serves Indian specialities for the on-the-move clientele, their resourcefulness has paid off in kind.

They also have outlets in Nairobi at Westlands Mall and along Mombasa road and in the UK in Knightsbridge area on Brompton road and in Edgeware London.
