THE Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has signed a 2-year contract with communities around Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

The agreement stipulates that selected individuals will plant crops along the park boundary as they protect planted trees.

It allows the individuals to cultivate six metres into the park. It also calls for the protection of the tree seedlings from damage during farming activities.

The community conservation warden, Francis Mbogha, said the agreements were being signed by parish communities in the districts of Kabarole, Kasese and Bundibungyo.

Mbogha was on Friday speaking at the signing ceremony at Kanyambara trading centre in Kasese district.

“We have so far signed agreements with 14 parishes in Bundibugyo, 10 in Kabarole and eight in Kasese district,” he disclosed.

Mbogha said the agreements were signed under the five-year collaborative boundary management programme funded by the World Wildlife Fund for nature.
