THE Government is to construct 270 low-cost housing estates in Kasoli slum area in Tororo municipality.

THE Government is to construct 270 low-cost housing estates in Kasoli slum area in Tororo municipality, reports Faustine Odeke.

William Mudde Walaga, a director in the housing ministry, said the three-year project worth $1m (about sh1.9b) is being funded by the United Nations Habitat and dfcu bank.

He said the project was aimed at uplifting the living conditions of the residents.

Walaga said each beneficiary would get a two-bedroom house worth sh15m, adding that the units would be mortgaged by dfcu Bank and would be payable within 10 years.

He said the loan recovery will be handled between the bank and members of saving and credit cooperatives.

The mayor, Jack Ogolla, said the project would address poor sanitation and diseases in the slums and called upon the residents to support it.
