DUNCAN Mugabe upset seventh seed Anas Fattar of Morocco 6-4 6-2 at the Gabon F2 Futures tennis circuit on Wednesday in Libreville.

The Ugandan youngster avenged his first leg defeat in the Gabon circuit against the North African to sail into the third round where he will meet unseeded Mathieu Goven from France.

The victory was a clear sign of improvement on the side of Mugabe’s game. He is in line to meet the top seed Kamil Capkovic from Slovakia in the third round if he beats Goven.

Mugabe and Mohammed Safwat lost to Capkovic and Komlavi Loglo 7-5 6-0 in the second round of the men’s doubles.

The Libreville tournament is the last event for Mugabe as he completes his tennis season which has seen him play five ITF Futures tournaments on the seniors’ circuit.

The teenager’s highlight since tackling the seniors’ circuit was reaching the quarter-finals of the East African Futures circuit in Bujumbura and winning the men’s doubles title.

He will conclude his hectic season when he takes part in the East Africa ITF/U-18 circuit in Kampala early December. This will also double as his last tournament as a junior.

He is now ranked 1,147 in the world after playing on the circuit in addition to winning $1,571 (sh3m) in prize money.
