HIGHER Education state minister Gabriel Opio has said unemployment can be tackled through training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

This was in a speech read by finance state minister Fred Omach during the second joint graduation ceremony of Aptech Worldwide, the International School of Business and Technology and Sikkim Manipal University, India recently.

Over 1,000 students received diplomas and degrees in hardware networks, business administration, computer accounting and information technology.

“Education must be practical. The quality of the degrees you get from India are of international standards and you won’t go wrong when searching for jobs,” the minister said.

The executive director of Aptech, Varghese Mundamattam, said this graduation was a fulfilment of the institute’s objectives.

“When we started in 1999, we aimed at transforming Uganda into a technology hub and today, our dreams seem to be realised,” he said at the ceremony at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

The Indian High commissioner to Uganda, Neeraj Srivastav, said the ICT sector in Uganda was growing and that the students had reached an important milestone. “The skills you have got will help Uganda attain the dream of becoming the ICT hub in the Great Lakes Region.”
