KANUNGU resident district commissioner Can. Ben Rullonga has warned residents against using Congolese refugees as house maids or wives.
“Anybody found using the refugees will be taken to the courts of law,†Rullonga said. Rullonga was on Friday addressing residents at Kihiihi in Kanungu district at a ceremony where 2,362 out of 13,000 Congolese refugees were transferred to Nakivale refugee camp in Isingiro district.
“I am informed that some families here are hiding refugees in their houses, which is illegal. Anybody found harbouring unregistered refugees will be prosecuted,†he said.
Rullonga also urged armed refugees to surrender their weapons to the security personnel.
The Congolese fled into Uganda after Laurent Nkunda’s forces captured Ishasha town, 40km from the Uganda border.
Rullonga said more than 2,000 refugees had to be transported to Nakivale on Saturday and Sunday.
He assured the residents of security at the border. Meanwhile, prices of food and accommodation have tripled due to the increasing number of refugees in the area.
A plate of matooke and beef has increased from sh1,200 to sh3,000 in most restaurants. Many lodges are now charging between sh7,000 and sh30,000 for accomodation, up from between sh3,000 and sh10,000 a few weeks back.
