It is time to root out LRA's Kony

EDITOR—I have read about the recent meetings of Government representatives with the LRA leader, Joseph Kony, in Congo and the disappointing outcome. Kony has done a lot of harm to Ugandans and our economy. I am surprised that the Government is coming out now to say that if he does not sign the peace accord, it will destroy him.

My question is: If the Government has the capacity to destroy Kony, why has it taken so long to act? Is there anything enjoyable in seeing millions of people in northern Uganda dying?

Has anyone been enjoying seeing our economy being torn apart by endless wars? Let me hope this time, the Government will root out Kony from wherever he is hiding.

EDITOR—By refusing to sign the final peace deal, Kony has again done one of the things he does well— denying the people of Uganda, particularly those in the north, the peace they are entitled to (The New Vision, December 2). This is proof of what the Government has always said that Kony is actually up to nothing, but is simply working with and for external forces.

There is a common saying that it is human to make a mistake, but not so human to make the same mistake again. When Kony failed to sign the peace deal the first time, it appeared human. This time round, we have a reason to raise our eye-brows. I think we should change the strategy. Kony has cited the ICC indictments still in force as the main impediment.

The Government should enter into discussions with the ICC about removing these indictments before it can think of sending a team to Ri-Kwangba again. All we want is nothing, but peace in northern Uganda.
