Christmas is round the corner and along with the holiday cheer come pains like solidly booked saloons, the astronomical amounts charged and the hurried and poorly done hair not to mention that you will barely find the time to visit one anyway. Hey, hey, that does not mean you reach for the pair of scissors. Do it yourself at home.

Be it a hair cut, curl, plaiting or colouring, you can get it done in the comfort of your own space. To double your success rate is a friendly pair of helping hands. “I get my daughters to colour my hair because they are gentler with me. Everyone pitches in so that everything runs fast. Am always happy with the result,” says Fredrine Nambuya, 50.

“The basic necessities for home hair care are; a blow dryer, a reliable hot water source, shampoo, conditioner, hair oil, rollers and a sharp pair scissors,” says Maggie of De Age Salon, Ntinda.

“The rest depends on what you want to do with your hair,” she continues. Millie Mbabazi, a hair specialist, says that you ought to consider what kind of hair you have, what portions of chemical you need and what range of products works best for you, before you consider doing your hair at home.

Hair dressers often argue that products made with African hair in mind work fairly well for Africans. Try the Kenyan manufactured Venus hair products. To curl your hair, you will need a curling formula, for example sof n’ free s- control texturiser, a neutralising shampoo, warm water and a curl activator and enhancer.

For a better shaped head of curls, visit a barber before you curl your hair.

Procedure:
-Shampoo the hair. After washing hair, apply the texturiser, paying special attention to the hairline.

-Leave it for about 15 to 30 minutes and then wash out thoroughly. Pat dry and add a curl activator to curl the hair. Style your new curls.

“The Venus moisturer and curl activator is convenient because while it keeps the curls in your hair, it also moisturises to make it comb-able,” said a hair specialist during one of the ongoing Venus promotions for the new range of products.

Treatment for straight perm
After shampooing and rinsing out your hair thoroughly, gently drythe excess water, apply treatment generously from the roots to the end and cover with a plastic cap. Leave for 10 to 20 minutes and then rinse out thoroughly, with warm water. Dry your hair, oil it and style as usual.

However, Maggie insists the more elaborate hair processes like retouching are better left to specialists. “An amateur can easily cause irreparable damage to your hair,” she says.
