Institutions of higher learning have been urged to develop programmes which address the millennium development goals.
Prime Minister Apolo Nsibambi said the Government had liberalised the education system, which had enabled many Ugandans and scholars from other regions to acquire quality higher education.
He was presiding over the inauguration of Lugazi University and the installation of its first chancellor on Friday.
“Lugazi University is coming out with some unique programmes which have hitherto been missing in institutions of higher learning (leather tanning science and technology management, and employment and labour studies). I urge you to expedite the development and submission of those programmes which are to be accredited by the National Council for Higher Education,†he said.
Prof. George Kirya, the chancellor, expressed optimism that the university would produce outstanding graduates.
The university, located on the Kampala-Jinja highwa near Lugazi town, acquired its provisional licence in July 2007 and started admitting students in August. It has about 800 students.
Alfred Higenyi, the board chairman, said: “Over the next two years, we are targeting a student population of over 3,000. We have enough land for expansion.â€
