FORMER Uganda Professional Boxing Commission (UPBC) presidential aspirant Salim Uhuru plans to form a new body to cater for professional pugilists.

Uhuru said yesterday that he was left with no option but form the Uganda Professional Boxing Union (UPBU) after he was barred from standing in the UPBC elections.

UPBC said he had not paid membership fees for the past three years.

Clause B in the amended constitution of UPBC knocked out Uhuru from the race for the presidency as it states that “all members who wish to be elected to office must be active and fully paid up members of the commission for at least three consecutive years as at the election date”.

Celestino Mindra will return unopposed as UPBC boss tomorrow.

“You can see what the UPBC have done. They have already named an executive before the agenda that will be put in place come tomorrow,” Uhuru said.

“ They are killing the sport. We are going to form a new body to cater for professional boxers.

“We want to be affiliated to IBF, WBA, WBO, IBO, WBF, WBC, ABU and all the other bodies in the world and we do not want restrictions like those the UPBC has been placing on us,” an angry Uhuru announced.

“At the moment we are drawing up a constitution that will be approved by all members of the union.”
