UGANDA is due to launch a United Nations-initiated network today under which companies will expand their corporate social responsibility activities into development projects.

The launch of the UN Global Compact will coincide with a one-day meet on ‘Building Partnerships for Development’ at the Metropole Hotel in Kampala.

Jan Martin Witte from the German-based Global Public Policy Institute, said the UN Global Compact was launched by former UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, in 2000.

The global compact has been launched in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana and Sudan.

“The network will help to identify potentials for private-public partnerships and how companies can link up with the organisations to reach out to communities,” said Witte.

He disclosed that a study was conducted in Uganda to analyse the role played by the private sector in solving development challenges in the country.

Addressing journalists at the Media Centre yesterday, Tom Buringuriza, the deputy executive director at the Uganda Investment Authority said the conference was timely and would help to strengthen the significance of corporate social responsibility.

The conference is organised by the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE) and the investment body in partnership with MTN, USAID, German Development Service (DED) and the UN Global Impact.
