THREE Kenyan university students were killed and 11 injured when their taxi overturned at Namasere, 5km on the Bugiri-Tororo highway yesterday.

The students of Kampala International University were heading to Kenya for Christmas, said the Police and a survivor, Peter Barasa.

The Police in Bugiri identified the dead as Lilian Wanja, Evans Onyungwa and Kome, all Bachelor of Education students.

Traffic chief James Tibeijuka said the Toyota minibus overturned after bursting a tyre at around 4:30am. He blamed the accident on speeding and over-loading.

The taxi was reportedly carrying 18 passengers instead of the 14 it is licensed to transport.

All the passengers were Kenyan students heading to Busia border town where they would board Kenya-bound-buses.

Tibeijuka urged drivers to avoid speeding, especially during this festive season.

A survivor said the driver lost control after one of the passengers screamed when he saw that the driver was dosing.

The taxi reportedly left Kampala at about 2:00am.

Bugiri Hospital medical superintendent Dr. Samuel Isabirye said most of the injured had deep cuts on the heads and broken limbs.

Some of the injured were identified as Kariuki Mbuko, Kofa Imrani, Gerald Mulangira, Hamida Mohamed, Mohamed Sagala and the driver of the taxi, Geoffrey Tibihika, who was also admitted in a critical condition at Bugiri Hospital.

Taxi conductor Ayoub Baka reportedly attempted to jump out of the taxi after realising danger and sustained deep cuts. He was admitted to hospital in critical condition.
