A soldier in the 37th battalion has been sentenced to death by hanging for murdering a soldier in Amuru district.

Prosecution told court that John Mugisha Kamandole while at Olwiyo detach in Purongo sub-county on December 6, 2004 shot dead private Abdu Olee Ayaa at about 10:30pm. “You have been found guilty of murder and convicted as charged.

“Any person convicted of murder shall be sentenced to death by hanging as authorised by law. You can appeal to General Court Martial within 14 days,” Lt. Col. Eugene Ssebuggwawo ruled.

Kamandole pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying he was the one taking care of his siblings since his parents were dead.

The convict had earlier been sentenced to ten years in jail for manslaughter after he boxed to death Private Daniel Balikagira from the UPDF 4th division quarter guard while in detention.

The court also acquitted sergeant Geoffrey with whom Kamandole was jointly charged with murder.
