CORRUPTION is more rampant among people aged 25 to 30 years, a survey has said.

Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, a consultant with REEV Consults International Ltd., said: “There has been a shift in the ‘middle age crises’, which has caused a shift in the age of people that are more corrupt.”

In the past, Nuwagaba said, the ‘middle age crisis’ affected people of 40 to 45 years.

During the ‘middle age crisis’, people who are not doing well compare themselves with others in their age group, he explained.

“Most people in this age group want Mercedes Benz cars, mind boggling houses and to host lavish weddings in one week,” he said.

Nuwagaba was on Thursday speaking at the International Corruption Day commemoration held at the Inspectorate of Government in Kampala.

“This is a major worry to this country’s development. The majority of people in Uganda are still young. They are growing into this age bracket, yet they are not guided on how to fight corruption,” he explained.

Nuwagaba said the youth were buried in the ‘get-rich syndrome’ and were competing to amass wealth quickly.

The most saddening aspect of this behaviour is that it has become a standard against which other peers compare themselves, he lamented.

Uganda, Nuwagaba said, had failed to fight corruption.
“People think it is normal to be corrupt,” he added.
