Iryn’s Unplugged Xmas show was off the hook

THAT it was Christmas day did not matter when Iryn Namubiru was unplugged at Club Silk. The idea made perfect sense, at least for those who turned up to see one of the country’s best female vocalists.

This being the festive season, everyone was in a buoyant mood. The stage setup was impressive as well, with magnificent lights, and a fantastic sound.

Namubiru looked confident in front of her audience, cooing softly with the help of a live band.

But what made this show one of the most satisfying on was the zeal with which she went about her performance.

Namubiru’s robust voice was her greatest asset, especially considering the fact that she does not have the biggest of hits today. She sang most of her old and new songs, including the 2006 chartbuster, Nkuweeki, which got everyone singing along.

It was those intimate touches from Namubiru that saved this from being just another Club Beer Unplugged concert. She was adept at connecting with her audience by maintaining that feeling of intimacy.

But the most interesting moment was when she went into Samwa Samwa, her most recent collaboration with Jose Chameleone.

The husky-voiced singer was not there to perform with Namubiru, but there was no doubting the admiration the crowd had for her as she sang his parts in a feigned croaky voice!
