With most artistes booked to perform at over two venues on the New Year’s Eve, the greatest fear for Sheraton Hotel’s Garden’s Bell Lager and No-End Entertainment Mega Xplosion was that there would be a low artiste turn-up.

Alas! That was not to be. Most of the leading and upcoming acts showed up. Those who have been keen in the past couple of years know that Bell Lager and No-End Entertainment have always been able to throw a great party. However, the Mega Xplosion 2006/7 might just top them all.

Excited fans, who jam-packed the gardens as early as 5:00pm seemed to love whoever graced the stage. Some artistes took their time to entertain while others were simply in a rush to finish and go elsewhere. Priscilla Kalibala was among the first with a good performance, effectively heralding what fans were expecting.

Rachael Kiwanuka, though still considered an upstart, gave her all to the crowd. Lady Mariam, with her signature tune, Tindatine and infectious smile, was just as good as were Menton Kronno, the Gombyas and Emperor Orlando. Some fans first expressed reservations about folk sensation Nandujja and her Planets performing, but when they got on stage, we were all sucked in.

With a medley of his popular songs and the fast-rising Bafudde, Bebe Cool stormed the stage amidst a deafening uproar. This was minutes after performing with Peter Miles and Menshan, who also excelled in their own right.

Iryn Namubiru showed why she deserved top honours when she mingled with the crowd off the stage, but Sweet Kid went a notch higher. He combed the entire place with one hand holding the mic, while the other clutched money from fans.

An excited couple gave $100 to Mega Dee, while Ragga Dee, ignoring the fact that Saddam had been hanged earlier in the day, still went ahead and appeared on stage with a dancer donning a mask of the fallen despot along with MJ and Bush’s.

Phina Mugerwa, Ngoni, Obsessions, Qute Kaye, Denis Rakla, KS Alpha, Maisha and G-Force dancers also performed to people’s satisfaction as did Amarula Family.

Dressed in Muslim garb, the comedians led the revellers into the New Year. The fest was as varied in performances as the crowd was in age. At the end of it all, revellers had enjoyed themselves so much they did not believe it was time to go home.
