THE national chess league is set to start March 6 according to the 2007 calendar released by the local federation. The chess season rolls off next weekend with the national junior championship, expected to attract youngsters from across the country, at Lugogo.

THE national chess league is set to start March 6 according to the 2007 calendar released by the local federation. The chess season rolls off next weekend with the national junior championship, expected to attract youngsters from across the country, at Lugogo.

The first tournament for the senior players will be the Liberation Day Open slated for January 28 followed by the Rapid Valentines chess tournament.
“We anticipate an action packed local season as a way of keeping most of the players busy and tuning up for international events,” Chess official Vianney Luggya remarked.

The MTN National Ladies Championship will be run March 8-11 followed by the Easter International Open in April.
The traditional Father Grimes post primary championship, that is usually over subscribed, will be held in May.

Qualifiers for the 38th Olympiad start in May when national stars start tussling for slots to make the final team.

Uganda Chess Federation has also lined up a number of mini tournaments for the season that include Rwabushenyi Memorial Open, Luzira Open, Mengo Open and Stanbic Open.

Mulago Open will close the local calendar December 7.

On the international scene, the federation will take part in the All Africa Games in Algeria in June. Uganda will also feature at the World Amateur championships in November and also host the Africa Junior championships.

Mulago Kings will start the season as the defending league champions.
