The Police yesterday said it was not opposed to the Democratic Party (DP) holding its planned rally in Masaka on Saturday but wanted the party to notify it in writing.

Police spokesman Edward Ochom yesterday said it was necessary for the party to notify the Police in writing about the rally to enable them put in place adequate security.

“We have absolutely no problem with DP holding a rally in Masaka but they should inform us in writing so that we can prepare security to guard against any eventuality.”

Ochom said by yesterday the party had not yet notified the Police.

when contacted yesterday, party spokesperson Betty Nambooze said the Masaka Police boss had been notified by their party branch chairperson, Ben Bukenya.

She added: “If need be, we can also notify the Inspector General of Police.”

Nambooze insisted that they were to conduct countrywide rallies under the theme ‘State of the Nation’.

Last weekend, Police fought battles with defiant DP supporters in the city. They wanted to hold a rally to publicise the Dr. Andrew Kayiira murder report.
